Vitamin A
Introduction:
Also known as ‘Retinol’, Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin which may be found in several forms, though principally in foods of animal origin (precursors of the vitamin are found in foods of plant origin as carotenoid type compounds).
Key Benefits:
Vitamin A is known to help maintain health skin and mucus lining, strengthen the immune system from infection and helps vision in dim light.
Cons:
Vitamin A deficiency is a serious problem in, but not limited to, the developing world causing significant problems with eyesight along with other undesirable effects.
Taking too much Vitamin A can cause health problems such as Osteoporosis. Additionally, if you don’t fulfill the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin D, the harmful effects of excessive Vitamin A consumption are increased. High doses of Vitamin A may also decrease the bone mineral density.
Suggested Serving Size:
FSA advise that maintain a health, balanced diet will provide the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin A. The FSA recommended daily allowance of Vitamin A is 0.7 mg for men and 0.6 mg for women. Up to 1.5mg of Vitamin a may be taken, however taking significant amounts can cause health problems.
It is advised not to supplement Vitamin A if you are pregnant.
